SUMPUR KUDUS, West Sumatra — Septian “Deki” Andriki collapsed to his knees in the mud on the night of Nov. 19, 2025, sobbing uncontrollably before a flower that had consumed more than a decade of his life.
The former elementary school physical education teacher turned self-taught botanist had spent 13 years hunting for Rafflesia hasseltii, a parasitic bloom so elusive that scientists had not confirmed a sighting in the wild since before 2015. The breakthrough came through an unlikely tip from a local resident, leading Andriki, Oxford Botanic Garden researcher Chris Thorogood, and Indonesian National Research and Innovation Agency scientist Joko Ridho Witono on a grueling, nearly day-long trek through tiger-inhabited rainforest in Sijunjung Regency.
When the team finally reached the site and found the flower unfurling its blood-red, white-speckled petals, Andriki could barely speak.
“After 13 years, a 23-hour journey, risking tiger attacks, nearly dead phone batteries, I couldn’t talk,” he later said. “I just cried.”
A park ranger initially thought Andriki had been possessed by forest spirits, Thorogood recalled. Watching the emotional outpouring, the British botanist said he felt like “the luckiest guy alive.”
A Biological Anomaly
Rafflesia hasseltii belongs to a genus of approximately 42 recognized species — bizarre, chlorophyll-less parasites found exclusively in rainforests across Sumatra, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Brunei. These plants lack leaves, stems, and roots, living invisibly inside host vine tissue for years before erupting into blooms that can span nearly a meter across and emit the odor of rotting meat to attract carrion flies for pollination.
That combination of rarity and biological strangeness makes rafflesias a holy grail for field botanists — and nearly impossible to protect. Researchers estimate that roughly two-thirds of known hasseltii populations grow outside legally protected forests, exposed to logging, land conversion, and human disturbance.
The 2025 rediscovery, part of a multinational research effort backed by the University of Oxford and involving scientists from Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, served as both a taxonomic triumph and a conservation warning. The team has been collecting DNA from more than a dozen rafflesia variants across Indonesia to map how the genus’s species relate to one another, hoping genetics might finally explain why the plant blooms so rarely and unpredictably.
The Quiet Work of Discovery
While the Sumatran rediscovery captured global headlines, it represents only the most photogenic example of a far larger enterprise: the ongoing, unglamorous work of identifying plant species — many for the first time, some possibly for the last.
At the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis, scientists discover and formally describe roughly 200 new plant species annually, accounting for about one in every 10 new plants named worldwide. In 2025 alone, the Garden highlighted standout discoveries including:
- A Costa Rican cactus in the moonlight cactus genus Selenicereus , suspected for 20 years before finally flowering and confirming it as a new, likely endangered species
- Mimusops sahakensis , an endangered member of the sapodilla family found on stabilized sand dunes along Madagascar’s eastern coast, known from only two sites threatened by charcoal production
- A new persimmon relative, Diospyros schatzii , named for a late Garden botanist
The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History reported that its scientists in 2025 published nine new species, three new genera, and one new subgenus. Botanist Laurence Dorr alone published four new species in the mallow family, including one from Guyana’s Wassarai Mountains found growing on red sandy clay.
Perhaps the most significant Smithsonian finding involved the humble grapevine: researchers described Rojovitis , a new subgenus of Vitis — the genus containing cultivated grapes — built around two newly identified, threatened wild grape species from Chiapas, Mexico, distinguished by red flowers and stems dotted with prominent pores. It marked only the third recognized subgenus of Vitis in nearly a century.
Innovation in the Field
Not all discoveries required deep wilderness expeditions. In Texas’s Big Bend National Park, volunteer botanist Deb Manley noticed small, fuzzy plants with maroon flowers sprouting between rocks — something she had never seen before despite the park’s extensive botanical survey history. She uploaded photographs to the citizen-science platform iNaturalist, triggering expert identification that led to the description of an entirely new genus nicknamed the “wooly devil” — the first new plant genus documented in a U.S. national park since 1976.
In Hawaii, discovery took a distinctly 21st-century turn. Researchers from the National Tropical Botanical Garden, the Smithsonian, and a robotics firm deployed a drone fitted with a robotic collecting arm to reach a cliff face on Kauai’s island that had proven physically inaccessible to human botanists. The drone returned with samples of a previously unknown plant in the carnation family, since named Schiedea waiahuluensis — believed to be the first new plant species ever discovered by drone.
A Race Against Extinction
These discoveries tell two stories simultaneously. The first celebrates persistence and luck: a 13-year quest, a two-decade wait for a cactus to bloom, a chance photograph, a robotic arm reaching where no hand could. The second story is more sobering.
Many of the plants botanists are finding for the first time are already, by the moment of their naming, among the rarest organisms on Earth — restricted to a single mountain range, a single stretch of sand dune, a single cliff face — often already threatened by logging, land conversion, or habitat loss.
Scientists estimate that thousands of plant species worldwide remain undescribed, many declining toward extinction before formal recognition — a phenomenon researchers call “dark extinction.”
Botanists at both the Missouri Botanical Garden and Smithsonian have long argued that naming a species is not merely an academic exercise. It is the necessary first step before any legal protection, funding, or conservation plan can exist. A plant without a name is, in practical terms, a plant without a defense.
Only once Rafflesia hasseltii was confirmed alive and blooming in Sumpur Kudus could researchers begin arguing, with data in hand, for stronger protections in a forest where most of the species’ known populations still sit outside any protected boundary.
Each year’s tally of new species is not simply an inventory of nature’s surprises. It is a race against time — run one flowering cactus, one drone flight, one tear-streaked jungle trek at a time.
