NAIVASHA, Kenya — For flower farmers across six continents, the silent dread of a 4 a.m. greenhouse inspection has given way to a new, more urgent alarm: the climate they relied on for generations is no longer reliable. From the volcanic highlands of East Africa to the tulip fields of the Netherlands, growers report that rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, and extreme weather events are disrupting harvests, threatening livelihoods, and reshaping a global trade that moves billions of stems annually.
The flower industry, uniquely vulnerable due to its perishable product and calendar-bound demand, has emerged as an early and visible frontline of climate change. Unlike grain or livestock, blooms cannot be stored or relocated, and their value peaks on fixed ceremonial dates—Valentine’s Day, weddings, religious festivals—that do not adjust when weather fails to cooperate.
Lake Naivasha: The Water That Will Not Stay Still
In Kenya’s Rift Valley, Lake Naivasha has become a symbol of climatic instability. For decades, growers feared drought as greenhouses sucked water from the shrinking freshwater lake. But since 2015, the pattern has reversed: unusually heavy rainfall on the Aberdare mountain range has driven water levels upward, submerging farmland and displacing communities.
Lina Jamwa of the Kenya Flower Council confirmed that farms have lost land to rising waters, disrupting production. “Some growers have already seen parts of their farms encroached,” she said. The council is still mapping the damage. Meanwhile, pests like the False Codling Moth have expanded their range due to warming temperatures, forcing new surveillance frameworks at farms and airports.
Patrick Mbugua of Wildfire Flowers Kenya described worsening disease pressure: “We’ve seen increased disease pressure due to unusual weather patterns—excessive hot weather brings pests, and low temperatures increase fungal infections.” Kenya’s flower sector, employing half a million people, faces an existential threat, yet some farms are adapting with solar arrays and integrated water management programs.
The Netherlands: Wet Winters Drown Tulip Bulbs
In North Holland, Arjan Smit has grown tulips for three decades, but recent winters have brought relentless rain. “Last year, it was just raining, raining, raining,” he said. The result: eight to nine percent of bulbs rotted in the field, with a further four percent fewer planted, leading to a thirteen percent loss of new bulbs for the next season.
Biologist Manuel Aguirre-Bolaños explained that tulips require long, dry winters to form flowers properly. Rising temperatures in the Netherlands—up 2.3 degrees Celsius since 1901—have reduced frost days, stunting stems and causing uneven blooms. The 2024 harvest fell substantially short, with major supplier De Vroomen Garden Products sourcing only about eighty percent of market demand initially, a shortfall that later rose to roughly thirty percent.
Colombia and Ecuador: Valentine’s Day on the Edge
The South American flower highlands face temperature swings that strike with little warning. In Colombia, an unusually severe cold snap in 2010 froze roses ahead of Valentine’s Day, destroying significant holiday production. “If you don’t do well in Valentine’s, it’s a lost year,” said Fernando Arenas of flower company El Redil, capturing the industry’s zero-margin calendar.
By 2024, an El Niño cycle brought record heat that pushed roses to bloom early, throwing off harvest schedules. Elkin Farfán of Phytotech noted, “El Niño has arrived with clear blue skies and high-temperature records. It is a challenging time.” Colombia’s flower exports, seventy-five percent destined for the United States, depend on a ten-to-fifteen-day harvest sprint that leaves no room for freeze, flood, or heatwave.
India and Japan: Festivals and Cherry Blossoms Under Pressure
In India, unseasonal rain destroyed marigold fields ahead of festival season in 2025, with farmers coining the term “wet drought” to describe the disaster. In Japan, cherry blossom records spanning twelve centuries have been repeatedly broken. Tokyo’s average bloom date has shifted from March 29 (1961–1990) to March 24 (1991–2020). Warm winters have delayed or even prevented flowering in southern regions.
Broader Implications
Growers globally are experimenting with solar power, pest surveillance, drought-tolerant plant trials, and climate-resilient genetics. Yet these adaptations remain piecemeal against the scale of change. The flower trade, built on specific, stable climatic windows, now operates in a system that increasingly refuses to hold still.
“The challenge for our sector is not simply whether we can continue to grow bulbs in a changing climate,” one Dutch supplier observed. “It is how we use our knowledge of cultivation, species, and site conditions to keep adapting.” For an industry that moves a flower roughly every four seconds at China’s Dounan market, the question is whether adaptation can outpace disruption.
